In our FAQ, Hairtec answers all your questions about hair transplants — from treatment duration to aftercare — so you can take your next step with clarity and confidence.
Yes, DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is internationally regarded as the latest innovation in hair transplantation and delivers demonstrably better results than traditional methods such as Sapphire FUE, Micro FUE and FUT.
The main advantages are:
Unique expertise at Hairtec
Where most hair clinics restrict themselves to smaller numbers of grafts, Hairtec is able to successfully implant up to 4,500 grafts in a single session. We have done so for years, with proven experience and outstanding results.
Objective comparison
Some hair clinics speak negatively about DHI, but this is often because they have no experience with this advanced technique themselves. At Hairtec we have mastered both DHI and Sapphire FUE and apply both techniques on a daily basis. Our advice and results are therefore based on hands-on experience, not assumptions.
During a consultation we can clearly explain the pros and cons of each method.
Conclusion
DHI is the most innovative and effective method available today. At Hairtec we honestly advise which technique suits you best — with the assurance that we have mastered both techniques down to the finest detail.
We recommend that our patients arrange to be brought and collected by a travel companion, because you may feel anxious beforehand and tired after a full day at the clinic. There are pleasant places nearby for your companion to visit, and there is a beautiful nature reserve next to the clinic that is perfect for a walk. Sometimes, however, people prefer to stay close to the patient. In that case we are happy to offer the use of our waiting area, which has a comfortable seating corner. If your treatment is scheduled around midday, we can also offer a complimentary lunch that your companion can share with you. Please let us know in good time if you would like to make use of this extra (free) service so that we can plan accordingly.
The donor area at the back of your head, in the hair crown, is an area where hair continues to grow throughout life. By transplanting grafts from this region, you can be assured that the new hair growth will last for the rest of your life. These hairs do, however, follow the natural ageing process, which means they may become slightly thinner with age, just like the rest of your hair.
On the precise spot where a graft is extracted, no new hair grows back. For that reason our team carries out the treatment in a way that ensures the donor area retains enough hair, with no unnatural bald patches or scarring. The average person has around 40,000 grafts available in the donor area. We therefore aim to harvest a maximum of 15% of these grafts, so that the donor area keeps an even appearance. We also specialise in splitting multi-hair grafts (grafts containing several hairs) into individual hairs, allowing us to achieve a maximum result with significantly fewer grafts.
Some clinics deliberately set high prices and continually run promotions to create a feeling of getting a bargain. We follow a different approach. Our rates are already very competitively priced, so we can offer consistently good value for money. If you compare us with other UK clinics, you will see this for yourself.
Promotions can also lead to dissatisfaction among people who paid the regular price. We always try to avoid that feeling. At Hairtec you can trust that you receive the best quality at the most affordable price. This is part of our transparent pricing policy.
A hair transplant is a precise treatment, and we always take the time needed to work with care. To avoid lengthening the procedure unnecessarily, we use a treatment process in which several hair technicians work simultaneously on different tasks. This allows us to complete even the more extensive treatments within 8 hours. Typically you can expect a treatment time of around 6 hours, including a break.
After about ten days the donor area has fully recovered from the treatment and you can resume most activities. During the ten-day check-up we review whether the healing is progressing well and prescribe any additional medication if needed.
We aim to give you honest, realistic advice tailored to what is actually achievable. To do this, we always start with a thorough discussion of your wishes. Next, your scalp is assessed for suitability for a hair transplant. We look at your hairline, the viability of the donor area and your hair density. Denser placement of follicles makes it possible to use more grafts.
We then explain the various treatment options we offer and the number of grafts that can be placed. You will have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions.
Based on the full picture we assess whether your wishes are achievable and within our possibilities. If your expectations are not realistic, we will tell you so honestly. Sometimes the donor area simply does not contain enough follicles for a successful result. Our approach is to ensure that the donor area also retains enough follicles after the treatment for an even head of hair and a smooth, scar-free skin.
This is one of the most fundamental questions we are asked. The number of follicles needed for the best result depends entirely on the volume, quality and structure of your hair. The degree of hair loss and your desired hair density also play a role in the advice you receive.
The follicles are removed from the donor area under local anaesthesia, one by one, using a surgical micro-drill with very fine hollow needles. This minimises any damage to your scalp. The choice of needles depends on your natural hair growth direction and the thickness of your follicles. We use variable needles (typically between 0.5 and 0.7 mm) to achieve the desired effect while losing as few healthy hairs as possible. By working precisely with fewer follicles we can still reach the desired number of placed hairs. The hairs are also positioned strategically in the recipient area, taking growth direction into account, to achieve optimal scalp density. In this way we can achieve maximum effect with relatively fewer follicles.
We also pay attention to maintaining an even hairstyle in the donor area itself, so as to prevent any bald patches after harvesting. During the consultation we can determine, on the basis of a thorough hair analysis, how many follicles can be placed.
Most patients report that they did not experience the treatment as painful. Our aim is to make sure your treatment is as comfortable as possible. To this end, we apply a local anaesthetic to the area to be treated, then make sure it has fully taken effect.
After the treatment, your skin needs to recover and you may experience some itching. We have suitable products available to help with this.
This question is asked very often, and the answer is simple: absolutely! Around 30% of women experience some form of hair loss, and we see an increasing number of women choosing a hair transplant. About 15% of our treatments are for female patients. Women always opt for the DHI treatment, which does not require shaving the top of the head — keeping the appearance much more natural (further information on the DHI method is available on our website).
Yes, that is certainly possible. We work together with Cosmetic Finance, a specialist provider of cosmetic financing services. If you would like more information or wish to apply online, you can contact them without obligation via www.cosmeticfinance.nl. Please note that your loan is arranged directly with the lender and that Hairtec plays no role in this.
There are various reasons why you might want to camouflage certain areas on your head. This may be the result of medical conditions, burns, scars or even the well-known bald strip that can appear after an old-fashioned FUT hair transplant.
At Hairtec Hair Clinic we can successfully treat scar tissue and re-implant follicles into it. The success of this treatment depends on several factors, however, such as blood circulation in the skin, the health of the donor area and your overall health. We are happy to discuss these aspects in detail with you during a consultation. If we believe that the desired result is not achievable, we will of course advise against the treatment.
In most cases we recommend a course of receptor treatment before the procedure. This course helps improve blood flow to the scalp, with specific attention to the affected area. This can promote the success of the eventual treatment.
The treatment can be tiring for you, so we strongly advise against driving a vehicle yourself after the procedure.
This is, of course, the most common question. You have certain expectations, and whether they are achievable depends on several factors. For example, you should be between 18 and 65 years old and have enough grafts available in the donor area of the hair crown. In general, however, we can offer a positive treatment plan for most of our patients. In addition, your overall health affects how smoothly you recover. We can review all this together during your consultation.
In the first days after the treatment you may experience mild swelling (oedema) on your forehead. This swelling will subside on its own within about a week. There will also be very small wounds visible in both the donor area and the treated area. These wounds will heal naturally within around ten days. After this period there will no longer be any visible sign of the treatment you have undergone.
For your own comfort it is advisable to stay at home during the first week after treatment. This is because you may experience some swelling, and you can certainly expect some crusting on the small wounds on your scalp.
During the treatment you are placed in different positions several times. This gives you the opportunity to stretch your legs. You can of course also use the toilet in between. For longer treatments we also offer a lunch, so that you can sit down and take a short walk.
Yes. A hair transplant is a proven method to permanently restore areas where your hair has fallen out. Our confidence in the quality of our treatments is reflected in the lifetime growth guarantee on the placed hairs. If any shortcomings should occur, we will (if medically possible and responsible) restore the relevant area(s) free of charge. In that case you will also receive the full aftercare programme from us once again.
A hair transplant is generally a cosmetic procedure and is normally not reimbursed by health insurers. If, however, your hair loss is the result of an accident or burn, you may potentially qualify for a contribution. For more clarity it is advisable to first contact your health insurer.
For the tax authorities, a hair transplant is considered a voluntary cosmetic procedure and therefore cannot be claimed as a deductible expense. In rare cases a (partial) claim may be possible, but there must be a direct medical cause for the hair loss. If this is the case, we recommend first contacting a tax adviser to discuss the possible options.
Part of our team of hair transplant specialists are of Turkish origin, but they have been living and working in the Netherlands for a long time. They are permanent members of staff at Hairtec Hair Clinic — not temporarily hired people who are flown in, as is often the case in this industry. Throughout your aftercare programme you will regularly see the same team again.
Our choice of these experienced specialists is driven by medical considerations. In Türkiye, unlike many other European countries, there are dedicated medical training programmes (at higher professional and university level) for hair transplant specialists.
Thanks to the thriving cosmetic sector in Istanbul, the country is at the forefront of innovative techniques. This ensures that you are in the hands of a team that has followed a specific medical training, has up-to-date knowledge and training, and has gained extensive experience with the Sapphire FUE and DHI methods. When it comes to DHI, you can be sure that we are the leading specialists with the most experience and the highest-quality results.
These qualified colleagues carry out all procedures under the supervision and responsibility of the chief physician at Hairtec Hair Clinic. Our team of doctors is trained in the Netherlands and, of course, has official medical registration.
You can therefore trust that you always receive the most advanced hair transplant techniques, carried out by an expert and specialised team that meets the strict medical standards required for quality and safety. Hairtec Hair Clinic guarantees this.
We regularly see people who have had a hair transplant elsewhere but are not satisfied with the final result. This can have various causes, such as insufficient hair density, an asymmetrical hairline that does not suit the face, the use of multi-hair grafts in the front hairline and/or excessive depletion of the donor area. All of these are signs that make it obvious a hair transplant has taken place. These people therefore want to improve their current situation and, having lost confidence in the first clinic, come to us.
Hairtec specialises in complex hair reconstructions and has built up considerable expertise in this area over the years. In such cases we aim, taking the patient’s wishes and the available options into account, to carry out a reconstruction of the hairstyle.
So if you have doubts about a previous hair transplant, or if you are sure that something has gone wrong, we can advise you on your options after a thorough hair analysis.
During the consultation we carefully assess how many grafts can be harvested at most without needlessly depleting the donor area. If, for example, the maximum achievable number of grafts is around 3,100, we will advise you to choose the 2,500–3,000 graft package. In this way we avoid you paying significantly more for just 100 extra grafts — a cost that is out of proportion to the price and quality. This is an example of our transparent pricing and honest treatment policy.
It is advisable to stop or significantly reduce the use of alcohol, nicotine and recreational drugs for two weeks before the treatment. The day before the treatment it is recommended to avoid caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, etc.), energy drinks and fizzy drinks.
You may have seen an advertisement offering a fixed price for a maximum number of grafts. Certain clinics use such pricing strategies.
It is important to emphasise that we do not intend to lump together all clinics that offer this kind of promotion. That said, this approach can have some inherent drawbacks that you, as a future patient, should be aware of.
A hair transplant is a specialised medical procedure that requires significant knowledge and experience to perform successfully. This calls for the right treatment method, where both patient care and the quality of the final result are central. Needlessly harvesting a large number of grafts can lead to depletion of the donor area, also known as “overharvesting”. This carries the risk that there will not be enough donor units left for a possible second procedure (should one ever be required). It can also result in bald patches in the donor area, preventing the hair from growing evenly any longer. It is essential to find a balance between harvesting enough grafts for the intended result and preserving a natural appearance.
The fact that a fixed price is offered therefore does not automatically mean that it is better value or higher quality. It is very likely that you will not need the maximum number of grafts. In many cases it is more cost-effective to choose a smaller treatment. Often this is also more suitable for your situation.
Hair loss has several causes. Roughly 2/3 of men experience hereditary baldness (androgenetic alopecia), which is caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which slows hair growth and eventually damages the follicles. The first signs include hair loss and a receding hairline, followed by permanent baldness. Hormonal imbalance, excessive stress, illness or an unhealthy diet can also lead to hair loss.
Among hair transplant providers there are also intermediaries with UK-facing websites who offer treatments abroad, sometimes referred to as “hair hunters”. The price of a treatment is partly determined by a clinic’s costs for location, staff, materials and so on. This means some overseas clinics can offer keener prices. It is important to note, however, that price is not always an indication of quality. In Türkiye in particular there are well-regarded clinics specialising in hair transplantation. It is essential to take possible additional costs into account, such as flights, anaesthesia, aftercare products and so on. It is also highly advisable to attend regular follow-up checks in the first year after treatment to monitor recovery and progress.
Another aspect to consider is that if complications arise abroad, personal support from the clinic is more difficult to obtain. Representatives in your own country are often not medically trained in hair transplantation and, in case of problems, will frequently refer you to your GP.
When you compare prices you will notice that our rates are very competitive, especially when you include all the costs (travel and accommodation) of a treatment abroad.
Usually you can see the intended result after twelve months. For that reason we carry out the final check one year after the treatment, where we assess together with you whether the promised end result has been achieved. If not, we then look together at how we can still get there.
There is a wide range of hair transplant clinics across the UK and Europe. Some clinics carry out the entire treatment locally, while others (the “hair hunters”) advise on treatments abroad — usually in Türkiye, where costs are generally lower but where you have no certainty about the medical standards you are used to at home.
The choice of a clinic is largely a personal decision based on your own feeling. If, however, you are looking for a team that delivers beautiful results, Team Hairtec is a safe choice. According to feedback from our patients — many of whom have had multiple treatments at different clinics — Hairtec is rated by them as the best hair transplant clinic.
Our team of hair technicians has gained extensive experience at various hair clinics, which has led to a rich and varied professional background. We are trained in the latest hair transplant techniques and are skilled at creating a natural and aesthetically pleasing hairline. We have also developed our own protocol that supports faster skin recovery, so that you can enjoy your renewed hair sooner.
It is understandable that the variety of names and abbreviations for hair transplants on the internet can be confusing.
For example, different clinics offer the FUE method and use their own invented names for it. This makes comparing different hair clinics more difficult. In essence, however, all these variations come down to making incisions in the scalp with a specific type of tool.
Some also claim to use stem cell therapy, which would in theory provide an inexhaustible source of hair follicles. If such a ground-breaking method really existed, baldness would by now have been solved. So do not be misled by such claims.
Honest advice and transparency are very important when selecting a hair transplant clinic. We recommend doing thorough research and attending several consultations with different providers. This way you can gain insight into the different treatment methods, techniques and costs.
To make it easier, the various techniques can be grouped into three methods:
A graft is a small piece of skin that can contain one to as many as four healthy hair follicles. It is important to note that a graft is not the same as one hair, but rather contains at least one to four hairs. These grafts are removed from the donor area during the treatment and then transplanted. During our procedures we split most of the grafts into individual hairs for implantation. This allows us to achieve a more natural and more aesthetically pleasing end result.
Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) is also known as the hair-sparing or unshaven hair transplant method. This is the most recent development in hair transplant techniques. With this method, generally only the donor area (from which healthy follicles are harvested) is shaved. In cases where someone has long hair (at least 10 cm in length) in the donor area, the hair can even be shaved in such a way that it falls over the shaved section, making it virtually invisible.
What is striking is that the recipient area, where the follicles are transplanted, in principle does not need to be shaved at all. This is because no channels (incisions) are made in this area. With DHI, the follicles are placed directly, one by one, using a special device — the Choi implanter pen. This method allows our specialists to implant individual follicles between the existing hair, with no incisions and no damage to the scalp.
The DHI treatment requires extreme precision, but thanks to our experienced team we can transplant even large numbers of grafts (up to 4,500 grafts in a single session).
This method is suitable for anyone who wants to return quickly to their normal life with a natural-looking hairstyle. We see that not only men but also women choose this method, because they prefer not to have a shaved crown or forehead.
At the moment, a hair transplant is the most common cosmetic procedure for tackling hair problems. During the treatment, healthy follicles — also known as grafts — are moved from the donor area on your head to the areas where your hair has thinned or fallen out completely. This is done because the follicles in those areas no longer grow sufficiently or have disappeared altogether. The placement of these grafts is carried out by our specialised team and takes place on an outpatient basis. After the treatment you can simply go home.
The usual donor area is most often the hair crown at the back of your head. These hairs have a different structure and are not sensitive to the DHT hormone mentioned earlier, which causes hair loss. As a result, the transplanted follicles from the donor area continue to produce hair throughout your life. As the years pass, however, your hair may naturally become a little thinner, which is a normal part of the ageing process.
The cost of a hair transplant varies depending on the chosen treatment method and the number of grafts required to meet your hair goals.
With us, the price is based on the number of grafts harvested from the donor area. Unlike paying per hair, you benefit from the fact that you pay per graft. This has significant advantages, because grafts containing several hairs allow us to achieve the desired result with a smaller number of grafts — which is also more cost-effective for you.
During the consultation you will receive a clear overview of the total costs. You will see that we are very competitively priced while still maintaining our high quality standards.
Hair-growth products can, in some individuals, slow down hair loss to a degree, but it is crucial to understand that this is never permanent. They can also cause side effects such as scalp irritation, itching, redness or, in rare cases, more serious side effects.
The two most common hair-growth products are Minoxidil and Finasteride.
Minoxidil can stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss in some people. It does so by improving blood flow to the hair follicles. Minoxidil must be applied continuously to maintain the results, otherwise hair loss can return.
Finasteride is an oral medication that blocks the action of the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT plays a key role in hereditary hair loss. Finasteride can be effective in reducing hair loss and promoting hair growth in some men, but it is not suitable for women. As with Minoxidil, Finasteride must be taken continuously to maintain the results.
Some people may also experience troublesome side effects, such as reduced libido or erectile dysfunction.
It is very important that anyone considering hair-growth products is aware of the possible side effects and consults their doctor before starting a course of treatment.
No, our hair transplant treatments are always carried out under local anaesthesia.
After the surface of your scalp has been numbed, additional anaesthetic is administered to the areas to be treated. This is done with very thin injection needles to reach the deeper layers of your scalp and to ensure that you do not feel any pain during the treatment. This way we make sure that the treatment is as comfortable as possible for you.
During the hair transplant you have the option of using our media portal, where you can watch television or listen to music.
All treatments at Hairtec Hair Clinic are carried out strictly under the medical supervision of our own doctors and by experienced, well-trained specialists. We use only specially designed and sterilised instruments. Before each treatment a medical questionnaire is completed to determine whether you are suitable for a hair transplant. The doctor also performs general checks to confirm your suitability and to identify and prevent possible complications. This keeps the risk to a minimum. The doctor also prescribes medication during the recovery period to support healing and to minimise complications in the post-operative phase. Your safety and the achievement of a successful result are our highest priority.
